StateOfTheCoastCONF 284 COLOR 2

Get involved and volunteer at SOC16!

At this year’s State of the Coast we are excited to offer a number of new volunteer opportunities related to professional development of our student attendees. Coastal professionals working in a variety of fields are encouraged to sign up and help make this year’s conference experience as enriching as possible for the next generation of coastal scientists, engineers, policymakers and more. Currently, sign-up is open for Mock Interviews and Student Oral Presentation Judging.

Mock Interviews

(also available here)

Mock Interviews at the State of the Coast are an opportunity for student attendees of the conference to practice their interviewing skills with coastal professionals in a variety of fields, from academia to private industry. Facilitated by the Student Engagement Committee, these interviews will be held in a private booth within the Exhibit Hall of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Interviewers will be available during timeslots throughout the contiguous sessions of the program in 30-minute intervals, and will be provided with Interviewer Guideline packets including feedback forms. Students will be able to sign up with Interviewers based on the Interviewer's listed field of work / mutual interests, and take a break from their busy conference day to stage an interview and practice their professional skills in a supportive environment. Here, students will be able to ask specific questions related to their interviewing experience and receive constructive criticism. This is one of several new opportunities being provided to students regarding workforce entry skills.

If you're interested in volunteering as an Interviewer, sign-up is currently available here.

Student presenters and attendees of the conference will be notified when sign-up is available for them.

Student Presentation Judging

Judging student presentations is an opportunity offered to coastal professionals every conference. Judges will attend and provide feedback (via a judging form) at at least three student presentations at the undergraduate and graduate level. By the last day of the conference, these forms will be compiled and used to decide on Student Presentation Prizes in the oral and poster categories, announced during Friday lunch. Please join us in making this cornerstone opportunity at SOC possible once more!

If you’re interested in volunteering as a Student Oral Presentation judge, sign-up is currently available here.

Student Poster Presentation judging sign-up is available here.

We encourage judges to sign up for more than three presentations across both categories, but due to time constraints judges may sign up for a maximum of three posters each.

Please note: in order to sign up for Volunteer Opportunities, you must already be registered to attend the conference. Volunteers do not receive complementary registrations.
